LSC
contracts with school districts and private schools
throughout New Jersey to provide occupational and physical
therapy services to students who require therapeutic
support to succeed in school.
Physical therapy assists with strength, endurance and all the gross motor skills necessary to function within the school environment. These may include such basic activities as sitting securely in a chair, moving around the classroom, getting from one room to another or onto and off of the school bus. Many children need help learning the skills needed to participate in gym class or to interact with friends on the playground. This may include the use of special equipment, adaptive seating or modifications to the school environment.
When in school a child's "occupations" are to be a student and a playmate. Occupational therapists provide help with the fine motor, visual, perceptual and organizational skills needed for activities such as handwriting, copying from the board, self care, peer relationships and prevocational skills.
Both
therapies address sensory and attentional problems as
well as problems with postural control and motor planning
that may be the basis of the child's difficulty functioning
in school. These therapies attempt to get the most a
child is capable of doing and teach ways to compensate
for problems that cannot be "fixed." The goal is maximum
independence and optimal function in all facets of the
school day. Because these issues also affect function
at home and in the community, occupational and physical
therapists act as consultants, sharing their comprehensive
therapeutic program with all of the people responsible
for the child's success both in and out of school.
LSC offers Karate lessons for children with special needs. The program meets Mondays and Wednesdays after school at the Karate USA Studio in West Orange, New Jersey. A letter of medical clearance is needed to participate in the Karate program. We welcome inquiries from physicians, healthcare providers, schools and families.
